HOOKED ON GOLD SPRING! Ah spring. Birds chirpping, trees blooming (AAAHHCHOOO), snow melting? Well, it will be soon. The Rockies can still get up to three feet of snow in a single snowstorm until the end of May. However, the snow is unstable enough that the ski areas begin to shut down the middle of April, and the streams swell with runoff from every high mountain sometime in May. For those of you coming from out of state to Colorado and the mountains, we want to take a moment to discuss altitude sickness. We have watched and cared for numerous enthusiastic prospectors coming here for a few days, working too hard the first day, and being unable or barely able to get out of bed for the next two. The change in altitude works your body much harder than you think, and, depending on your fitness level, can put you down for up to three days. Take those first few days EASY. DRINK WATER!!!!! Lot's of it. Watch your alcohol intake, as this will effect you adversly as well. DO NOT start eating all the salty things you don't usually eat and watch your salt in restaurant foods as well. If you feel sluggish and unwell and think you ate something that has dissagreed with you, you may very well have altitude sickness, not food poisoning. It will pass in a day or two, but it can be life threatening if you do not listen to your body and slow down. YES, we make it look easy......but we LIVE here, and we know that it isn't fun to get out of shape in the winter and then try to play in the mountains in the summer. With those thoughts in mind, have fun out there, and fill your holes. Remember the prospectors codes of ethics and be courteous to each other. Good Prospecting to You. |
